Speaking from the perspective of someone who just likes to play console games now and then, Okami provides hours of fun, and is easy to learn and play. It's appropriate for kids and adults alike (for those concerned about graphic violence, when an enemy 'dies' there is no blood or gore, they just float and disappear in one way or another). I love the unique and beautiful graphic design, and the story/main quest is engaging and easy to follow. All of the different areas in the world are interesting and there is plenty to explore. There are also shops conveniently placed all over the map for you to buy helpful items and weapons.

Unlike some other RPG/open world wii games, this game utilizes the wii remote's motion sensing abilities a lot (i.e. shaking and swinging the remote), especially with fights and with drawing (which occurs a lot!), so don't be surprised to have a hurting wrist after hours of vigorous play! It does allow for a more physical experience of the game though, so I would not say it's a bad thing at all - it adds to the experience.

Ultimately, I would highly recommend this game to anyone - and for such a low price, I would say this unique game is a must-buy! BEYOND worth the money.

~Firstly, I just have to say to potential buyers that the Wii remote is NOT a major issue~

There are a lot of reasons to love this game, ranging from unique characters, to just bizarre and off-beat enemies, and no matter what, it is a memorable classic that is easily one of the best games of its kind (i.e. more art-oriented). The 3-d art is beautiful and all of it is very different than anything else you will find on the Wii. The game combines it's open-world aspects and mini-stages, such as battles or interactive cut-scenes, wonderfully, giving the player plenty of ways to either avoid unnecessary combat or grind relentlessly for dragon fangs. Many characters will have you laughing or crying by the end of the story (and some even have a weird mixture of both!), and though it feels short lived for such a magnificent game, there is a whole host of side content to unlock upon beating the game.
My only real concerns about this game are the issues of its conversion to the Wii, and game balancing; for the casual gamer, this is a fun little story to wander around in at a nice, easy pace. However, for a hardcore gamer, or one that focuses on clearing the game as quickly as possible, it is just way to easy. I breezed through the first half of the game in just a few hours, and I finished the entirety of it two days later after a break. Not to say that it won't take time to discover all its secrets, just that I was so excited by the story-line that I couldn't help but push forwards and find the end. The enemies are mediocre at best, and simply switching between spamming physical attacks against enemies and slices could get you through most of the game (this isn't true about boss fights, all of those were awesome!).
Another concern, echoed by many people on the 1 side of the spectrum, are the motion controls. I just want to say that I steeled myself for beginning this game and my first challenge with the brush was.... painting in a river. It's that simple. The only times a shaky hand or faulty sensor hampered me was in the knocking down this random wall person who randomly popped up in places all over the island (seriously, is there just a factory that produces them and then catapults them to random places of the globe or what?!) other than that, there is nothing too difficult to master after 3 or 4 tries. This realistic brush control added way more to the game than it took away. Seriously, unless there is something wrong with the remote and the player is slow and careful with their brush strokes, there is no way to mess it up in any game-destroying way. It's just one of the games that actually fully utilizes the Wii's motion controls. It's what makes the Wii actually deliver on its reason for existence!

So anyway, in summary, if you own a Wii, you absolutely must get this game!

(Also, sorry if this was a horrible review. It's just my first so please don't flame me if I offended anyone by saying the controls were easy. I just don't think they were any reason not to buy the game.)

An Obscure treasure in videogames

I can honestly say this is the most original game that has come out in decades. Playing as the spirit of a God manifest as a white wolf, you have to rid the world of evil and bring light back once more. The most fascinating part of this game is it is completely drawn in an ancient Japanese art style, where everything in the world seems to have been painted with brushes. Using your "God's Power" allows you to freeze the frame, and paint various objects into existence. You fight through the world and gain new weapons, defenses, and God powers as you work to rid the world of evil.

I love this game not only for its hours of fun and entertainment, but for the sheer beauty of its style and design.

I had read many reviews for this game and always considered purchasing it, only for something to prevent my purchase every single time. Due to a significant price reduction on Amazon, I finally bought this game a few weeks ago (it is Jan 2011 now), slightly skeptical of how this game might hold up after 4-5 years (this was originally released in 2006 for the PS2). 40 hours of gameplay later, I was convinced I had just completed quite possibly one of the best adventure games I had ever played. The other reviewers have covered the interesting story, ABSOLUTELY brilliant graphics/art, and the overall creativity with a lot of praise (no pun intended...although this might only make sense to those who've played the game) and I agree with them 100%. The surprising thing is how well the graphics hold up after 5 years. I was expecting the game to show a bit of age, but I was surprised. This game still looks absolutely AMAZING.

However, this game isn't flawless. There is a bit of a learning curve with the Celestial Brush and the game does sometime confuse one Celestial Brush stroke for another (i.e. the game accidentally calling out the Sun when drawing a circle for the Bloom brush stroke during Mr. Orange's dance instead of making blossoms bloom). I do not wish to make it sound like the Brush mechanic does not work at all but as an honest review, it must be stated. With that being said, this confusion issue does NOT hamper the pace of the game or the gameplay and it is actually a non-issue for 99% of the time (as reflected by my 5 Stars for rating as well as fun). There are also elements that some may find inappropriate (in form of certain characters or attacks). However, this again is a mostly a non-issue and does not hamper the game overall.

Overall, after you get past the introductory elements (i.e. possibly the first 15-20 mins) in the game, the game sort of grabs you, takes you on an absolutely engrossing adventure, and never really lets go until the game is done. To anyone who is on the fence regarding purchasing this game, I have nothing more to say than please purchase the game (this also applies to people who haven't considered purchasing the game yet). You will be glad that you did. Absolutely worth every single penny you spend.

This was an AMAZING game! It was extremely frustrating at times trying to use the remote as the writing brush, but once you get used to it, it’s okay. The story itself though, all of the incredible detail, and the length of time this game takes, made it fully worthwhile.
